FTP is simply a method of transfering files between computers, you shouldn't have to change your pages to make use of it.
FTP to Lycos requires that Passive mode, sometimes also called PASV mode, be turned on in your FTP program. The help file with the program should tell you how to do this. http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/servicenews/ says there was recent problem with accounts beginning with "A" so that be the reason you are having problems connecting.
