Name servers simply convert human-recognisable domain names such as google.com, microsoft.com, lycos.co.uk to computer-recognisable IP addresses.

This system is used partly because things like http://www.lycos-europe.com is easier to remember than 213.193.14.149

Every domain name must have a primary nameserver and at least one secondary nameserver. Lycos has four; ns1 - ns4.lyceu.net

For more information see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System and http://www.howstuffworks.com/dns.htm
