I can't tell you exactly what's going on but i can give a good guess. What may be happening is that either Cute Site Builder or the server may be "timing out".

What happens when you transfer files using FTP is that the file is split up and sent as small packets of data. The server and your computer are constantly talking to eachother - "did you get that packet?" "no, send it again" or "yes, but it appears damaged so send it again" or "yes, send the next packet". After a couple of failures, or not being able to contact eachother at all, either your software or the server will break the connection. These problems are always more noticeable on slower dial-up connections.

You could try sending the files during quieter times - late at night or early in the morning or you could try another method of tranfering the files. i've written a little about different methods of FTPing files at http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/brisray/comp/cwbasics1.htm#FTP
