Hello everyone!

The best free forum that I have seen that works quite good on lycos tripos is phpBB. Here are instructions to install it on tripod.

The first step before installing anything is to activate php by clicking 'activate now' on your account page ( http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/myaccount/ )

Next, you'll want to download it. You can download it here : http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php
Choose the Full Package in Zip format at the top and select the closest server to you.

By default the forum only has english, but you can download more languages if you scroll down to "New Translations" on the page mantionned above. There is are two icons with "zip" on them, you will need both. The first one
is for the texts and the second one is for images.

When you have the phpBB downloaded along with your languages, unzip phpBB-X.X.X.zip in a folder on your computer. To install the languages, unzip the lang_language.zip into the phpBB folder named "language". In that folder there is already a folder named "lang_english". Next, unzip the subsilver_language.zip into the phpBB folder templates/subsilver/images/. You should also see a "lang_english" folder in that one.

After all the languages you wanted are there, it's time to really install the website. To do so, open your favorite browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) and type in the adress bar ftp.tripod.co.uk and log in using your username and FTP PASSWORD. The ftp password can be different then your website password. If you lost it, go to http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/myaccount/ and click password reminder. A page with all the content of your site will appear. Leave the page open and go on your computer where you have unziped phpBB and copy the folder named phpBB2 and paste it on your website page. Now this usually takes a long time, so just go do something else while you wait. When it's finished, go on your website phpBB folder (something like http://members.lycos.co.uk/username/phpBB2/ ) You will now begin the real installation.

It will ask for the following information (may not be in this order) :

Installation type : Install
Default language : Choose english or one that you previously installed, if it's not there you might not have installed it correctly.
Database type : Choose Mysql 4
Database Name : it should be this -> username_uk_db, you can look it out on this page : http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/build/php4u/
Database username : same as your website
Database password : It doesn't really matters, can leave it blank or write your website password
Prefix for phpBB password : Leave it to the default, it doesn't matter except if you want to install phpBB more than once
Admin username : This will be the name used to login on the forum and to access Admin controls.
Admin password : Your choice, it does not have to be the same as your website password.
Admin email : It will be used for password recovery.

When It's all done, click the button and it should be installed. If it doesn't do it, go to your forum index ( http://members.lycos.co.uk/username/phpBB2/ and if it's installed properly it will tell you to delete the 'install' and 'contrib' folders. You can delete those by doing the same above using your browser, or you can use WebFTP here http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/build/webftp/ Either way, delete the install and contrib folders.

Go back to your phpBB page ( http://members.lycos.co.uk/username/phpBB2/ and it should be working. You can login at the bothom using your Admin Username and Password. When you are logged, a link will appear at the bothom for the Administration panel. When you go there, there might be problems with the google ad, so just hit F5 until the ad appears on the right. You can look around this panel and change the options, modify the forums and more.

If you encounter any problems, I suggest that you look in the phpBB fact here http://www.phpbb.com/support/documents.php?mode=faq

I hope this will help some people,
World Cretornica
